The bulk of the Orne Family Papers, which consists of the shipping papers generated by Timothy Orne (1717-1767), Josiah Orne (1768-1825), William Orne (1751/2-1815), and Joseph Orne (1778-1806) spans almost a century of Salem shipping from 1732 to 1825. The papers reflect the business, legal, and personal papers of each cousin, their immediate families, and their in-laws.
Salem Marine Insurance Company Records, 1815-1897, undated
The Salem Marine Insurance Company Records include a volume of directors' meeting minutes, a volume of stockholder meeting minutes, and 35 volumes of marine policies. Except for two missing volumes the marine policies form a straight run from the company's beginning in 1856 to six years before its dissolution. It also contains a ledger showing dividends paid to the stockholders (1858-1883). The collection also contains material relating to French and Danish spoliation claims.
